-    * Mini-bio do Apresentador: Dr. Nathan Jacobs earned a B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Missouri (1999) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis (2010). Since then, he has been a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky, USA. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2016 for his work at the intersection of computer vision, video surveillance, and remote sensing. During 2017-2018 he was a Visiting Research Scientist at Orbital Insight, Inc. where he developed methods for building detection and classification from satellite imagery. Dr. Jacobs' research area is computer vision; his specialty is developing learning-based algorithms and systems for processing large-scale image collections. His current focus is on developing techniques for understanding the visual world from geotagged imagery, including images from social networks, publicly available outdoor webcams, and satellites. His research has been funded by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and Google.

-    * Description: Over the past ten years, deep convolutional neural networks have emerged as an essential building block for the creation of state-of-the-art computer vision systems. While research challenges remain, today they can be easily incorporated into systems for a wide range of applications. They possess a unique combination of benefits that make this possible: they can be trained in an end-to-end manner, such that all parameters are optimized for the task; they are fast at inference time, without requiring sampling or other expensive inference steps; and the existing software tools enable the flexible integration of a wide variety of data types, often with very little custom code. This two-part course will cover foundations, both theoretical and practical, as well as the current state-of-the-art in computer vision research.

-    * Abstract:
-Trillions of pixels are collected every day. Together they provide many perspectives of the world, ranging from what someone had for dinner to where new buildings have been constructed. The key challenge is translating this raw data into useful information in a way that scales to large geographic areas. This talk provides an overview of my work in developing algorithms that can learn how to extract such information with limited human effort. Topics will include extracting phenological trends from outdoor webcams, combining social media and satellite data to map visual attributes, and learning to predict population distributions.

-O Dr. Burns é professor de computação e chefe do departamento de computação da Universidade Johns Hopkins. Sua pesquisa tem incrementado os limites de escalabilidade de ciência dos dados com tecnologias emergentes de armazenamento, com aplicações que variam de simulações numéricas para turbulência, neurociência através de microscopia e astronomia observacional.
-Dr. Burns obteve seu doutorado em Ciência da Computação pela Universidade da Califórnia em Santa Cruz em 2000 e o bacharelado em Geofísica pela Universidade de Stanford em 1993. Antes de ingressar na Universidade Johns Hopkins foi pesquisador do Centro de Pesquisa da IBM em Almaden, onde obteve o prêmio Outstanding Innovation. Dr. Burns também recebeu um prêmio pela sua carreira pela National Science Foundation.

-Durante a visita o Dr. Burns ministrou o curso "Parallel Programming for Data Science" para alunos da CAP e de outros programas de pós-graduação do INPE, e para servidores do instituto. Também apresentou dois seminários: "Reproducible Data Science with Gigantum" e "External Memory Systems for Data Science and Machine Learning".
-Este seminário foi também apresentado no CPTEC, durante uma visita às instalações do centro.

-This talk presents the Gigantum open-source data science work environment that automates the best practices and skill-intensive tasks that are crucial to good data science. The data scientist works in familiar tools, such as RStudio and Jupyter and Gigantum makes sure that all aspects of a data science project--code, data, and environment--portable, shareable, and continuously versioned. Gigantum runs on locally (on laptops) as well as the cloud so that the data scientist can work without incurring cloud computing costs. Users can collaborate in groups or on public projects, exploring by launching on the cloud, contributing in their own branch, or customizing with new code or private data in their own fork.

-In modern computer architectures, the movement of data from storage or memory to the processor limits the performance and scale of scientific data analysis and machine learning. This bottleneck has grown much more acute as we use multicore processors and GPUs. This talk covers a decade of research in my lab that redesigned computer systems to move data through the memory hierarchy and applied these systems to make data science (graph analytics and sparse linear algebra) and machine learning (k-means and random forests) more efficient.
-The lecture is self-contained and designed for the computational scientist that is familiar with using data science and machine learning programming tools. It will lightly review computer science concepts, including the memory hierarchy, external memory algorithms, and non-uniform memory architectures.

-    * Mini-bio do Apresentador: Jonathan is a Program Director in CSIRO's office in Santiago, Chile and is leading the development of projects across Latin America. Jonathan joined CSIRO in 2011 after more than a decade in the Queensland State Government. Jonathan has expertise in developing, implementing and operating environmental data and information systems in Government and research sectors in Australia and around the world. He has expertise across the environmental information domain and specialises in finding innovative, collaborative solutions to challenging problems through the use of new and emerging technologies.
-    * Description: Reuniões Técnicas e apresentação: Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has an extensive history working in environmental monitoring, modelling and information systems, with a strong focus on applied solutions for governments and industry. I will present some information about CSIRO and our work in both Australia and Chile in the areas of earth observation, oceanographic modelling, data integration and data visualisation systems. This will include our work on the Great Barrier Reef through the eReefs project as well as with the salmon industry in Chile. I will also cover our work on information platforms for supporting earth observation, including the Open Data Cube and our time-series sensor platform, Senaps. I will also cover our current engagement in Latin America and our interests in promoting discussions on continental-scale earth observation platforms. I will highlight several inland and coastal examples of our work including new in-situ sensors for water colour, some new satellite capabilities and new initiatives in Blue Economy in Australia.
