Agencies from all over the world have launched or are preparing for launching many earth observation systems of high resolution, multi-bands and multi-sensors including SPOT-5, Landsat-7, ENVISAT-1, TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission), EOS-AM (Earth Observing System), TERRA-MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and CBERS (Chinese Brazilian Earth Resource Satellite). Each of these images has its own characteristics which different levels of spatial or spectral…

Automated Registration of Remote Sensing Image Data

Image registration is the process of matching two images so that corresponding coordinate points in the two images correspond to the same physical region of the scene being imaged. It is a classical problem in several image processing applications where it is necessary to match two or more images of the same scene. With the increase in the number of images collected every day from different sensors, automated registration of images has become …

Image Restoration

The image restoration problem attempts to recover image that has been degraded by the limited resolution of the sensor as well as by the presence of noise. The resolution of images obtained by the satellite sensors is degraded by sources such as: optical diffraction, detector size and electronic filtering. As a consequence, the effective resolution is, in general, worse than the nominal resolution, that corresponds to the detector projection on the ground and does not take int…

Image Simulation

The simulation of satellite imagery is a useful tool as an image processing technique. In sensor feasibility studies it is common practice to develop simulation procedures before the actual sensor is built, so that many technical aspects can be predicted in advance. Two types methods are usefulin remote sensing applications: (1) simulation of a (panchromatic) band by a combination of multispectral bands and (2) simulation of an image from a higher resolution image.

MTF Analysis

The spatial response of a sensor is as important as its spectral and radiometric response.
The spatial response can be determined in terms of the Point Spread Function (PSF) or the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), in the frequency domain.

Multiresolution Analysis

Multitemporal and multisensor analyses of satellite images are becoming important research fields in Geo-information sciences. This is mainly due to the large amount of remotely sensed data accumulated in the last twenty-five years. We are also waiting for even more information to come from a great number of new and powerful Earth observation systems. Improvements on spatial and spectral resolution mean more gigabyte for a computer to manipulate. Hence, in order to expl…

Remote Sensing Data Mining

Although a huge amount of remote sensing data has been provided by Earth observation satellites, few data manipulation techniques and information extraction in large data sets have been developed. In this context, we show a new system for spatial data mining, presenting the operational environment named GeoDMA, developed to implement such approach.
